Red Folder Reminder

This is a quick reminder for MCC faculty and staff of MCC's Red Folder resource for students in crisis.

Students experience stress across the mental, physical, and social spheres of their lives, and helping students in crisis can feel like a daunting task. There are times when a student may present with problems that feel far outside of our control, which in turn can cause a lot of confusion and anxiety for faculty and staff. As such, the Monroe Community College Counseling Center introduced the Red Folder Initiative to MCC’s campus in Fall 2024.

Initially created by the University of California system in 2012, the Red Folder Initiative is designed to offer a handy reference tool for college faculty and staff to identify students' problem areas and provide appropriate referrals. The Red Folder highlights common stress indicators in different areas and empower faculty and staff to guide students to suitable service providers for both urgent and non-urgent issues. In addition, the guide offers simple tips on how to approach students in crisis effectively while also normalizing the limits of your role.
